Menstruation, also called period or monthly. It is the visible cyclic physiologic uterine bleeding and discharge of tissue from the inner lining of the uterus through the vagina.
Key Points about menstruation:
The bleeding usually continues for 2 to 7 days.
Usually, periods begin in menarche- the age between 12 to 15 years and stop after menopause – age between 45 to 55 years.
The average interval of menstruation is 28 days and it may occur in between 21 days to 45days.
Menstruation doesn’t occur during pregnancy and initial breastfeeding.
These are the common symptoms and may be severe in some women.

Natural remedies to get rid of menstrual cramping and painful periods:
Applying Heat- It is the easiest method to apply for getting relief from menstrual cramps and pains. Heat relaxes the contracting muscles in the uterus and thus reduces pain.
*Placing a heat pad or hot water contained plastic bottle over the lower abdomen and lower back.
*Having a hot shower also can relieve you from pain.
Stick to whole grains only– Eat 3 servings of whole grains; oat meal, brown rice, and millet. Avoid as much as possible processed or refined grains.
Avoid sugar- Eat less sugar and sugary foods
Reduce consuming dairy products – Don’t consume dairy products like milk, ghee, paneer, cheese,curd etc. in your daily diet. Eliminating these reduces pain.
Less consume meat, egg yolk in your daily diet
Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in diet. Having Omega 6, magnesium and Vitamin A rich foods reduces a lot of pain during periods.
Papaya- It has anti-inflammatory properties. It is in rich with calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron and carotene. Papaya intake soothes the uterine walls and contracting muscles. Include papaya in your daily diet before and during periods to relieve a lot of pain.
Ginger is an anti-inflammatory herb which may be best to have during periods to get rid of pain. You can take it daily with lemon juice and honey during menstrual cycle and may include it in your cooked food also.
Basil- It contains caffeic acid which is very effective for reducing pain. You can take it as juice three times in a day during pain.
Flax seeds- It has fatty acids which improves the uterine functions and reduces menstrual pains. Take one to two tablespoon of flaxseeds during pain and can use it in salads and smoothie.
Cinnamon – The anticlotting and anti-inflammatory properties contained in Cinnamon can relieve you from menstrual pain and it is a rich source of fiber, iron, calcium and manganese. You can have its powder as tea and can use it in juice with honey and warm water. Drink this juice three times a day during the first day of period.
Fennel- Fennel can also be used as a pain relaxing herb. You can have it with warm water and honey. Start taking this before the expected beginning day of period and continue it with the next 2days. Consume it as hot to experience better result.
Blackstrap molasses- It is a rich source of calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, magnesium, selenium and vitamin B6. It lessens pain reducing the blood clots and frees the muscles in uterus. Have it with warm milk and up to your desire.
Chamomile is a sweet flower and an anti-inflammatory. One can have it during periods as tea for pain relief.
The herbs – Cramp bark, Black haw, Black cohosh, Dong quai, Wild yam etc. may also be useful for pain relief. You should have to consult an herbalist before taking them and it is not advised to take them during pregnancy.
Oil massage- Some natural oils may also be tried to reduce pain. Oil massage can be done in the form of blends or hot compress. German chamomile, sweet marjoram, sweet fennel – these oils may reduce pain on all levels.
